Ten Years On: Cabin Fever

Welcome to a new segment on Raz’s Midnight Macabre, ‘Ten Years On’ takes a look at films from a decade ago and sees what influence and impact they had.



After the success of my original ‘Ten Years On’ post of “Freddy VS Jason” I decided to carry it on so lets get on with it. This time we take a look back at “Cabin Fever”.

When this film burst onto the scene it was seen as a throwback to the great films of the 70’s and 80’s, Eli Roth even stated that he took inspiration from films such as “Evil Dead”, “John Carpenter’s The Thing”, and “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”. Roth spearheaded a group of film-makers known as ‘The Splat Pack’,  a collection of film-makers  credited with bringing back ultra-violent and gory movies.

There was a-lot of hype around the films release, most Horror fans were anticipating it’s release after the 90’s Horror films went more towards thrills than scares. I was one of those people who was very excited for it’s release and I wasn’t disappointed when I finally got to watch it, I was only a teenager and I remember cringing a-lot and watching a few scenes through my fingers (I was young okay!).

“Cabin Fever” was released to great success and had a huge impact on the genre, it put Horror back into the spotlight. Gore was especially pushed back into popularity and the theme of kids going to a cabin in the woods, things we all know too well these days. It also spawned a sequel and 2 more entries are planned for release – “Cabin Fever: Patient Zero” and “Cabin Fever: Outbreak” for next year.
 
The film made Roth an instant star and many were wondering what he’d do next, and this is where people get divided. His next movie “Hostel” took the torture and nudity to the next level, it was just too much for some and with a minimal plot it bored others. Personally I wasn’t a fan of his stuff after “Cabin Fever”, which I thought was a shame as his debut film showed us he had great potential.

“Cabin Fever” definitely left it’s mark on the genre and there’s hope he could return to form with his newest project “The Green Inferno”. Fingers crossed!
