Master filmmakers and genre experts celebrate and dissect the most terrifying moments of the greatest horror films ever made, exploring how these scenes were created and why they burned themselves into the brains of audiences around the world.
Some of you may remember all the way back to 2004, when Bravo released “The 100 Scariest Movie Moments”.

For the last few years I’ve been saying we needed an updated version of this programme and in 2022 Shudder finally delivered us one with “The 101 Scariest Horror Movie Moments Of All Time”. Horror fans were truly excited for it and rightly so.
It always makes me laugh though because, I mean, what is it we love about a list? We seem to really enjoy lists like this or the abundance of articles that are “Top Ten Horror kills” and the like. I’m a sucker for them myself but it just amuses me how much we enjoy them.

Anyway, let’s get back on track. As I said before, Shudder gave us an updated list of scary moments in Horror and I have to say that I thought they did an excellent job with this. They didn’t just skim through scene after scene like you usually see with these.
With the programme clocking in at six and a halh hours spread over eight episodes it feels like this was more than just a thrown together programme, Shudder really worked hard on this and it’s shown on the screen and you truly feel it as a viewer.

Featuring the likes of Mick Garris, Tom Holland, Bryan Fuller, Tom Savini, Keith David, Joe Dante, Mike Flanagan, Tony Todd, Kate Siegel, Greg Nicotero and many, many more we get to hear some great insights into these scenes and how they were done and affected people.
It was truly a pleasure to hear these behind the scenes facts, but I truly enjoyed hearing how certain scenes affected people who are in the business themselves. It’s not stuff you hear very often and to see them talk as fans is refreshing to see.

As with any listing like this they won’t please everybody, you have people asking why such a film is ahead of another, why such a film isn’t on the list or just generally disagreeing that a certain film is on the list. Which whilst I understand, I don’t really think it matters.
What I see is a compilation of iconic moments from our beloved Horror genre being studied and dissected by some of our favourote people involved in the business. We even hear from some film scholars, which I have to say I found truly intruguing.

The list is quite eclectic and I liked that, it was a great mixture of sub-genres and in my opinion it covered all bases. If you haven’t watched this then I urge you to do so, I feel this will satisfy many fans and even remind you of some old classics you haven’t watched in a long time.
