Horror Review: The Found Footage Phenomenon (2021)

“The Found Footage Phenomenon” is an independent documentary charting the origins of the found footage sub-genre, tracking it through to the technique’s current form, and asking what the future is.

This documentary is definitely not for everyone.

The ‘Found Footage’ genre seems to be a very devisive one, it seems to be you either love them or hate them. Me personally, I love them and have watched every single one I could get my hands on, but I still remember where it all started.

In 1999 a little film was released called “The Blair Witch Project”, no body could have predicted the impact it would have. That impact also affected me and I HAD to see this movie, it would be the film that kicked off my love for the ‘found footage’ genre.

Whilst the documentary obviously covers the impact of “The Blair Witch Project”, it’s not the be-all and end-all of it. It goes over many numerous features and has lots of intriguing interviews with the people who’ve made some of these films .

I really have to give props to this documentary, It’s actually very clever. Whilst I won’t ruin it for everyone it raises some great questions about the history of the sub-genre and I found it seriously engaging and thought provoking which I really wasn’t expecting.

If you’re a fan of the ‘Found Footage’ genre then “The Found Footage Phenomenon” is a documentary that you really need to see.
