Ten Years On: Dark Skies

For this ‘Ten Years On’ post we take a look back at “Dark Skies”.

I’m a real sucker for a good alien encounter film.

This was a film that came out of nowhere, there wasn’t really any kind of advertising for it (at least none that I saw) but I have a vivid memory of seeing the trailer while searching on YouTube one night and it immediately caught my attention.

With these style of films there has to be a balance of both Sci-Fi and Horror, this film does that and also manages to add a mixture of Drama to it with is family dynamic storyline. This really helps the viewer engage with the characters and feel emphatic for them.

I thought this film was actually very well written and there’s way more tension than I expected there to be, this is also helped by the great performances from the cast, especially Keri Russell who I thought was outstanding in this feature.

This was a seriously surprising watch for me and it’s always baffled me how it never got a lot of recognition, I mean there are still pople out there who’ve never even heard of this, which was one of my reasons for this post.

Ten years on and “Dark Skies” still makes for fun viewing and is a fine addition to the ‘Alien’ sub-genre, I just wish more people knew about it.
