Horror In 2024

What does 2024 have in store for Horror fans?

2023 was certainly a funny year for the Horror genre. Whilst it seemed that everyone was talking about the newest Horror releases it also seemed like the Horror genre wasn’t a big deal, it was so strange. Has it once again become the norm for Horror to be in the main stream? If so, how does that effect the genre?

2023 seemed to be year of possession film, with likes of “The Exorcist: Believer”, “Talk To Me”, “The Pope’s Exorcist”, “It Lives Inside”, and “When Evil Lurks” all breaking into the mainstream bubble this year. It’s not surprising really as supernatural type films seem to always be a favourite.

With that being said it’s certainly going to be interesting to see what gets released this year. Are we going to see more ‘critically acclaimed’ so called elevated Horror type film, more remakes/reboots and sequels, more 80’s homage or a new break out Indie Horror film?

Talking of reboots, we’re set to get a new “The Strangers” trilogy. I loved the first film, still do, I’ll be honest with you though, the sequel did nothing for me, so my hopes aren’t exactly high for this new trilogy but I’ll be sure to give it a try.

We’re also going to be getting another prequel to the Horror classic “The Omen” with the ‘cleverly’ titled “The First Omen”. I know I’ll end up watching it, out of pure curiosity more than anything, but again my expectations aren’t exactly high for it.

There is one remake I’m actually looking forward to and that’s Robert Eggers take on “Nosferatu”, whilst I’ve found his work to be quite art housey for my liking I think his style will be perfect for this. Plus it has a great cast that includes Willem Dafoe and Bill Skarsgård.

We’re also going to see the long awaited sequel to the legendary Tim Burton film “Beetlejuice”, sure it’s not a Horror film but there’s no doubting it’s a film beloved by Horror fans. As a big fan of both Keaton and Burton I have to say I’m excited for it.

Another sequel I’m excited for is the the new “Terrifier” film, which is set to be a Christmas film. I know these films can be pretty divisive but I just enjoy them, it’s refreshing to see someone pushing the bouindaries and shocking audiences.

What I’d personally love to see is a thriving Indie Horror scene get some of the limelight, there are so many great and fresh ideas and an abundance of up-and-coming talent that gets overshadowed. It’s time to break through that glass ceiling.

Here’s hoping that 2024 will be a great year for our beloved genre, personally I think it’s certauinly going to be an interesting one .
