Ten Years On: Oculus

For this ‘Ten Years On’ post we take a look back at “Oculus”.

Looking back on this film, I have to say that it was a really strange release.

The film was part of the WWE Studios releases and, well let’s just say that the company didn’t exactly have a great reputation when it came to its film releases. Though for this one I have to say they ultimately succeeded, though it was a one off for them.

Due to all this there wasn’t exactly a lot of hype around the film and many simply diregarded it before it was even released. Thing is though, I’m a curious person and an avid wrestling fan. Plus there was one name attached to this that grabbed my attention.

That name was Mike Flanagan, I’d watched a little film called “Absentia” and I thought he was someone to look out for (well, I was right). This film certainly raised his profile, as well as his leading lady in her first American role, Karen Gillan.

If Flanagan had’ve agreed with the studios to change it to a found footage film then the film would’ve actually been made as early as 2006, but Flanagan refused and I give him kudos for that as he certainly could’ve simply agreed and got paid.

Ten years on and “Oculus” is still a highly entertaining watch, I certainly think that it deserves a lot more recognition than it gets. If you were one of the people who dismissed it and never watched it then I urge you to give it a try.
