Horror Review: The John Wayne Gacy Murders – Life And Death In Chicago (2024)

A comprehensive, chronological and historical documentary series on the entire life and crimes of the infamous serial killer, John Wayne Gacy.

No one does a true crime documentary like John Borowski.

When news of this documentary was first announced I was ecstatic, I’ve been a huge fan of Borowski’s work for years and I knew he’d knock this out of the park. Then when it was announced that it was going to be an eight part series, I was absolutely exhilarated.

One of the many reasons I’m such a fan of John Borowski’s is his eye for detail. He leaves no stone unturned and wants to give his viewers every single piece of the story, but only if its factual. There’s no sensationalism here, only the truth, no matter how dark that maybe.

Though conspiracy theories, rumours and such are talked about. Even recent documentaries claims about Gacy’s crimes are talked about and to hear the opinions from the people who investigated him and know all the facts makes for intriguing viewing.

Don’t forget, this is a dark story. To hear it from the actual people who were around Gacy such as his childhood friend, his photographer, employees and such is captivating. It’s truly fascinating to hear their stories and perspectives as to how Gacy was at certain points in his life.

We also have interviews with the Officers who were involved in the Gacy case. From those who observed him, staked him out, arrested him and even trialed him. You can see it in their eyes that as they’re talking about their experiences that they’re reliving those moments.

Even those who had the most traumatic job of all, excavating Gacy’s crawlspace, tell us their stories and even though it makes for gripping viewing you can see that the case has left something of a permanent scar on their lives. I can’t even begin to imagine.

Hearing about his life behind bars was truly a real eye opener, sure we’ve all heard the tales of what he was up to in prison but to hear it from those that were actually there, watched him everyday, those who corresponded and even visited with him is just incredible.

The impact this case has had on peoples lives is extremely upsetting to hear but it shows the real life aspect of it all and that aftermath is something that is often forgotten about or not even talked about. Borowski makes us face all that, the harsh truth, as we should.

John Borowski’s way of documentary film making makes this a must watch, he lets the subject do the talking. The interviewees are never interrupted, they’re given freedom to talk and tell their stories as they see fit and the narrative isn’t manipulated.

An eight part series may sound like it could be a slog to get through and I get it, it sounds like a lot. But trust me when I say that the time just flies by as you get engrossed in each episode, and again that attention to detail, really stands out.

You also may feel like the whole John Wayne Gacy story is overdone, which again is understandable, but the way Borowski walks us through it all feels like we’re being told the story as if it was all brand new information. Not an easy feat, I’m sure you’ll agree.

Believe it or not the John Wayne Gacy saga is still ongoing and investigations are still being made and this documentary brings all this new information to light. There’s even details that this true crime aficionado wasn’t aware of, so there is still more out there.

Like I said at the beginning, no one does a true crime documentary like John Borowski and I still stand by that statement, this eight part documentary is proof of that. It’s also his most ambitious and best work to date and I for one can’t wait to see what he does next.
