Franchise Review: Critters Attack!

A reluctant babysitter must protect three kids from an invasion of ravenous critters.

For years fand were clamouring for a reboot of the “Critters” franchise, in 2019 we finally got it.

You know that old saying, “be careful what you wish for”, well that is exactly what I thought the tag line for this reboot should’ve been. Audiences waited twenty seven years for this and this is what we got, I would’ve waited longer for something better.

It may sound a bit harsh but this was such a huge disappointment for me and also many other fans of the franchise, we’d waited so long for this and what we got was extremely subpar. Fans, including me, expected so much more from this release.

Even bringing beloved Horrror Mum and icon Dee Wallace back to the franchise wasn’t enough to save this feature, that tells you something. I know the Critters films have always been ‘b-movie’ style but I’ve seen better fan made films than this.

The story is all over the place, the acting is awful, it’s only saving grace really is the puppetry and practical effects. That charm that made you love the other films is certainly not present here, plus no ‘Ug’ or ‘Charlie’?! That’s just criminal.

“Critters Attack!” is a seriously missed opportunity to reboot a beloved franchise and it’s a damn shame, we’re just left wondering, what could have been. If you don’t watch this film then trust me when I say, you certainly aren’t missing anything.

Miscellaneous facts about the film:

Dee Wallace after 30 years of having participated in Critters (1986), retakes her character from Helen Brown however she declared that the character was renamed as Aunt Dee for legal reasons between Warner Bros. and the writer of the first film.

The first Critters movie to not star Don Keith Opper as Charlie, or Terrance Mann as Ug.

The first film since the original to credit the voice actors for the Crites.

When Drea suggested playing card games, one of the kids said, “What is this, 1986?” 1986 was the year of release for the original Critters.

The device Dee uses to locate the Critters is similar to the PKE meter used in Ghostbusters.
