Horror Review: The Rule of Jenny Pen (2024)

Recovering from a stroke at an assisted living facility, a judge encounters a psychopathic patient who uses a hand puppet to abuse fellow residents.

I knew very little going into this film, something we don’t get a chance to do these days.

All I knew about this film going into it was that it starred Geoffrey Rush and John Lithgow, an on screen pairing I wasn’t aware I needed to see until this feature. In all honesty the casting was enough to pique my interest and I was glad I knew very little about it.

Before I carry on talking about the cast though I first have to praise the writing and directing of this film, it’s absolutely superb and I was pleasantly surprised by how well done the whole thing was. When a story manages to worm its way under your skin you know it’s done right.

Watching Geoffrey Rush and John Lithgow have a showdown truly makes for great viewing, it truly feels like a privilege to watching them go head to head. They manage to create so much tension and unease that you can feel it oozing out of the screen.

The story touches on some fears we all have in life. The anxiety we have about getting older, the terror we feel about losing control and the vulnerability that comes with it, the feeling of dread that isolation can have. Real life horrors that we all fear.

“The Rule of Jenny Pen” is not going to be to everybody’s taste but I urge you to give it a try. For those that will appreciate it you will be rewarded with an unnerving feature that has amazing performances.
