Everyone loves a good soundtrack, music & horror go perfectly together. BUT only the right music, and that music isn’t today’s commercialised artists.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m a music lover, even a fan of some of the artists music featured in Horror films, but I’m not a fan of their music in Horror.
“Jaws”, “Psycho”, “Halloween”, “The Exorcist”………… just a few of the films that the music is as well known as the films, characters & catchphrases themselves. Imagine these films without their scores, replace them with commercialised artists…. It just isn’t right.
There is a time and place in a film where the only time that sort of music is acceptable, like at a party scene. But as the main feature song, I don’t understand it and I don’t like it.
A good Horror score is one of the most essential things needed in a Horror film, it creates a mood, creates tension, creates fear. It can also do all this even when you’re not watching the film, it sticks with you
How many times have you been at the beach and heard someone do the Jaws theme, or even on TV where it’s used in 9/10 programmes doing a shark scene. Or a shower scene with the screeching violins. The music is irreplaceable.
The Horror score seems to be slowly dying out, being replaced by rock & metal, sometimes even pop or R&B, heck even dance music! Now for those who know me, know I’m a HUGE rock & metal fan, but I still stand by the fact it doesn’t belong as the theme for a Horror film.
The reason the themes are so amazing is because it’s been custom made for the film you’re watching, it captures the essence of the scenes it’s used in, the ambience of what were viewing.
I personally hope that the original Horror score doesn’t die out, I hope it makes a comeback and brings back the magic it has, it’s a powerful tool, a tool that must be used more often!

I agree with everything you said in this post, if only the powers to be in Hollywood cared enough about what we (the fans) wanted and not what they think we want.

I agree, although sometimes on very RARE occasions, an artist will make a song for a movie and somehow it just fits. Very very rarely as the theme song though. However even if the song fits, sometimes if its an artist you like, and you've heard the song before, it can take you out of the movie. This has happened to me before, because I start singing along and enjoying the music then it stops and im like huh what just happened !
