Horror Review: Hillside Cannibals (2006)

A group of teenagers in the desert become the prey of cannibalistic inbreds who live in the nearby hillside.

I initially came across this film whilst researching the ‘true story’ behind the 1977 classic “The Hills Have Eyes”, it peaked my interest enough to view it.

This feature is of the serious low budget nature, so if that’s not your thing then you better stop reading now as this film is in no way for you.
The film is based on the tale of Sawney Bean, the head of a 48-member clan in 15th/16th-century Scotland, reportedly executed for the mass murder and cannibalisation of over 1,000 people. Obviously with a tweaks of-course but you can see the links between the tale and Craven’s classic.
The films atmosphere is very, very dark and has the feel of an old school low budget Horror complete with overly bad acting, cheesy dialogue, dodgy editing and nudity and gore. What more could you ask for?!
I loved the death scenes as they were done without going too over the top and the ending is actually pretty decent, although not everyone is happy with it but I thought it to be a fitting end.
“Hillside Cannibals” is not to everyone’s taste but if you give it a try it may just surprise you.
