I’ve often wrestled with this tagline, ‘guilty pleasure’, to me I like what I like. I feel no guilt over what I like but this term seems to get thrown around a lot, especially with the Horror genre.
I’ve never really understood these, I get the concept of them but what I can’t grasp is the fact that people feel guilty about it. A bad movie is a bad movie, sure, but you don’t have to feel guilty about enjoying it.
For me I’ve always liked what I liked, I don’t feel guilty about it and to think that people feel they can’t enjoy anything properly and then label that as a guilty pleasure is just not right to me.
I even see entire subgenres such as 50’s/60’s/70’s/80’s/90’s Horror films, Sci Fi Horror…. You get the idea…. Used as guilty pleasures, why? Why can’t it just be something that you enjoy?
There’s even a genre of films known as ‘bad movies’ which I just don’t understand personally but even if that’s something that you enjoy (would you call it a good bad movie?!) then why feel bad about it?
Okay, I’m rattling on now but I think (if you’re still reading, I understand if you aren’t) that you get what I’m trying to say here, don’t feel guilty about the films you enjoy, embrace them and that way you’ll fully enjoy them.
The one that really irritates me and I mean really gets me wound up is when people say the Horror genre itself is their guilty pleasure. Why?! Don’t tarnish our beloved genre like that, it infuriates me.
Okay I’ll stop rambling now but I’ll leave you with this, Don’t feel guilty, just enjoy!
