What does 2018 have in store for Horror fans?
Well first of all let me wish you a Happy New Year! 2017 was a good year for Horror, it was the year that saw our genre once again be put into the mainstream.
We saw the resurgence of Horror legend Stephen King’s popularity with multiple films and TV shows released based on his work, which as a big fan of his work I was really happy to see. It seems that many others were too as the reviews were mainly positive.
One thing I have noticed has been the impact of the hit show “Stranger Things” has had on the entire industry, it really has been a game changer. Not that I’m complaining though, like many others I’m a huge fan of the show and it’s great to see the effect it’s having.
For example, the whole time I was watching the recent reboot of Stephen King’s “It” I just kept thinking that it had the same vibe as the show, just with more of the Horror element about it and it wasn’t exactly subtle about it. Again I’m not complaining.
I see this sort of trend continuing into 2018, film makers seem to be embracing the retro feel as was evidenced with last years films and shows, combine that with a perfect mixture of the modern film – making process and we could be in for a few surprises.
One of the big talking points at the back end of 2017 was the upcoming new reboot of the “Halloween” franchise, now I’m a huge fan of this franchise, it was what originally got me into Horror films so I’m not quite sure how I feel about this yet.
We know that the film will be a direct sequel to the original 1978 hit film. Writer Danny McBride stated “We’re kind of ignoring all the films past the first one, It picks up after the first one, but it’s sort of an alternate reality. It’s as if the first Halloween ended in a slightly different way.
We know that fan favourite Jamie Lee Curtis will be returning to the role of ‘Laurie Strode’ and that John Carpenter is also involved in the project in some way, I’ll leave you to make up your own minds about this but I’m feeling a little apprehensive myself.
2018 will also see the long, long awaited (TEN BLOODY YEARS!) release of “The Strangers” sequel – “The Strangers: Prey At Night”, hopefully the film will live up to people’s expectations, it’s certainly a film that I am really excited to see and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for it.
There’s also a few other sequels and spin-offs coming out this year as well. If you’re a fan of the series then “Insidious: The Last Key” looks like it’s going to be a fun watch, there’s also “The Conjuring” spin off “The Nun” which fans seem to be excited for.
Another sequel (reboot?) that I’m seriously excited for is the new “Predator” film, a franchise I have always loved and am looking forward to see where it goes next. Also if you’re a fan of killer animal films there’s the highly anticipated release of “The Meg”.
Also as an avid comic book fan I’m anticipating the release of the “X-Men” Horror themed film “The New Mutants” which looks absolutely amazing. There’s plenty to be looking forward to and hopefully more will be announced throughout the year.
Let’s hope that the momentum the Horror genre gained in 2017 keeps on going and we once again see a plethora of decent releases.
