The Thing is a 2002 third-person shooter psychological horror video game.
I still remember finding this game, I was in a game store that was having a big sale (I could never afford brand new games) and as I was flicking through the sale section when I saw this and I immediately grabbed at it.
In all honesty I never even knew this game existed, I was in absolute shock, how had I not known about this?! “The Thing” is one of my all time favourites. It didn’t matter anyway as I was buying this even if it did take up all of my budget, I had to have this and I couldn’t wait to get home and play it.
The next few days were a complete blur for me, it was a mixture of severe eye strain, bad thumb cramp, a ton of caffeine and sleep deprivation. I was completely hooked and that was a big shock to me as I’m not someone to play a game for hours on end like this.
In the game you play as ‘Captain Blake’, a member of a U.S. Special Forces team sent to the Antarctic outpost to determine what has happened to the research team. I loved the fact that it was a continuation of the film, it was a great idea and even John Carpenter endorsed the game.
I was completely engrossed in this world of monsters and I remember really feeling the tension and even jumping quite a bit as the game went on, it really was well laid out and it actually felt like you were in an extended part of the movie and I was loving it.
Unfortunately for me I never got to actually finish this game. I had the Playstation 2 version and sadly my console decided to just stop working and I couldn’t afford to get it fixed so that was it for me, I never did see the final result.
You see a lot of games getting remade and rebooted, a modern makeover for a modern audience, and I think this would go down well with today’s audiences, both old and new. The film is still as popular as ever as is gaming and who doesn’t enjoy a good Horror game?
It’s been nearly 20 years since the game’s release, sure the graphics haven’t aged well but the concept was amazing and as someone who finds it hard to get into a game, this one had all of my attention, so that’s saying something.
