Ten Years On: “Hobo With A Shotgun”

For this ‘Ten Years On’ post we take a look back at “Hobo With A Shotgun”.

It may have been ten years since this film was released but I can still remember my excitement over it.

I’ve always been a big fan of Rutger Hauer and when word was going around that he was going to be in this Troma style exploitation film I became ecstatic, I remember seeing the actual trailer for the first time and I thought that it had cult classic written all over it and I couldn’t wait to see it.

As soon as the credits started rolling I was left with such a big grin on my face, I had got exactly what I had wanted out of it, gore, sleaze, fun death scenes and even more gore. It was so much fun and I knew that I had just added a new film had been added to my favourites list.

I heard that wrestling legend Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts was considered for the lead, I could see that but I’m so glad Rutger did it, it was just such an unexpected role for him to take. One of the things that won me over was the practical effects, they looked great and really added to the films admittedly retro theme.

You may remember that there was a fake “Hobo With A Shotgun” trailer for the “Grindhouse” project with a different ‘Hobo’. The actor, David Brunt, was actually offered the role but disappeared, when found he admitted that he was terrified of taking on the role but does have a cameo.

Ten years later and “Hobo With A Shotgun” is still a wild ride to watch. If you haven’t already seen it then make sure you do, unless you’re of a sensitive nature then I advise that you stay far away from this.
