Ten Years On: “American Mary”

For this ‘Ten Years On’ post we take a look back at “American Mary”.

I know I say this quite a lot but I seriously cannot believe that it’s been ten years since “American Mary” was released!

I’ve been on board with the Soska Sisters (AKA The Twisted Twins) from day one, their film “Dead Hooker In A Trunk” was an absolutely amazing debut film that achieved cult status quite quickly. It also showed what great writers they are and the potential they had going forward.

After “Dead Hooker In A Trunk” fans kept asking ‘What’s next?’, well it took three years but fans finally got their answer when “American Mary” was announced and it would also have genre favourite Katharine Isabelle playing the lead. The internet buzz around this film was hot from the beginning.

Now I don’t mean to brag but the Soska’s sent me the script for the film before it was released and I was so enthralled by it that I read the entire thing in one night. I knew they were certainly onto a winner, what I didn’t think about was the amount of detail that went into the aesthetic of the film.

It was with this film that you saw there was a maturity in the Soska’s film making, much more thought was put into the style of the film, it’s characters, it was no surprise it became a hit amongst fans and it certainly gained The Twisted Twins more attention and it was fully deserved.

Ten years on and “American Mary” is still a firm favourite and rightly so, it’s got everything you want in a Horror and great story telling to boot. If for some reason you haven’t seen this film then I highly suggest you rectify that asap.
