Horror Review: Spell (2020)

A family man gets trapped in the attic of a hoodoo practitioner after their plane crashes. He finds out that he needs to break free and reach his family before it is too late for them.

“I’m bored, let’s search for a film” …….20 minutes later……. “Oh I don’t know, let’s just watch this”

Does that sound familiar? I’m sure it’s how a lot of us have discovered films over the years. I have to say though that I do enjoy just watching a film I know nothing about, it’s such a rarity these days but when it happens I like to take the chance. You just hope that the gamble pays off.

Luckily for me the gamble did pay off and I was presented with a film that I thoroughly enjoyed, it’s great that even now a film can still take me by surprise. The thing is I always find it so strange when you see decent films like this fly under the radar, I don’t think I will never understand it.

Now don’t get me wrong this film will not blow you away, but it will most certainly entertain you. I thought the story was really well written and you see a couple of subtle nods to Horror classics which was done well I thought, I won’t name them in case it ruins the film for you.

Also I have to say I was extremely impressed with the cinematography, I thought it helped showcas how good cinematography can really aid in building suspension. The casting is also great, especially our leads Omari Hardwick and Loretta Devine who put in truly fantastic performances.

“Spell” is a film that seems to have gone under the radar for some unknown reason, in my opinion this film more than deserves more attention.
