Horror Review: Shut In (2022)

When a young mother is barricaded inside a pantry by her violent ex-boyfriend, she must use ingenuity to protect her two small children from escalating danger while finding an escape.

I love stumbling across a film I know nothing about and just going in blind.

As we all know that’s a real rarity of an opportunity these days so it’s something I get a real enjoyment out of, no expectations, no idea what I’m in for, just going in blind, it’s great. I actually find that with these films I pay a little more attention than usual, I don’t know why that is, maybe it’s because I know nothing about it all.

One thing I did notice soon enough was that this was an indie flick but please don’t let that tag put you off (I’m actually sick of people treating it like it’s a dirty word). You can see that a ton of hard work has gone into the story it self, to try and make sure it’s not just one dimensional yet still believable and still thrilling.

Talking more of the story, I was shocked to find out this was screenplay writer Melanie Toast first and it’s certainly a name to keep an eye out for as it’s a damn near perfect story as you can get. It’s does it’s absolute best to avoid the usual cliches we’re used to seeing and more importantly the plot holes, which I found none of.

With the majority of the screen time being focused on our lead actress Rainey Qualley it helps that she puts in an absolute stunning performance. Everyone involved in this feature should be proud of themselves, you can tell that it was a real labour of love and everybody wanted to make the best feature they could.

I was pretty impressed with “Shut In”, sure it’s not gonna blow you away but if you allow it, it will definitely thrill and entertain you.
