A young Jeffrey Dahmer struggles to belong in high school.
For those of you who are going to watch this in hope of some blood, maybe some cannibal action or a good kill scene or two then you are watching the wrong film. This film is about the Horror of the psychological kind.
A few years ago I stumbled upon a graphic novel called “My Friend Dahmer”, as a fan of comics and an intrigue in the dark world of serial killers I instantly purchased it with no second thoughts about it. The book instantly became a favourite of mine, and when news broke that it was being turned into a film, I was ecstatic.
We all know the story of what Jeffrey Dahmer did, his horrific crimes shocked the world and for good reason. What you have here is a prequel to all the madness that happened, the teenage Dahmer who was struggling with himself and his warped way of thinking, it’s a rare insight wrote by someone who was there.
I must praise Ross Lynch who plays our lead role, he does an absolutely outstanding job and portrays the character so well that you get fully drawn into the world of a coming of age ‘Dahmer’. I must warn you that it’s a disturbing world, a world were sometimes you feel like you’re just getting a little to close for comfort.
Director Marc Meyers does an excellent job of making you feel as more than just an observer of the film, you start to feel yourself getting emotionally invested into what’s going on and more often than not you get that uncomfortable feeling as you know that this is just the build up to what wold eventually happen.
“My Friend Dahmer” is not going to satisfy everyone’s tastes, it’s more psychological drama with Horror elements rather than a full on Horror. I just urge you to at least give it a try, you may surprise yourself.

My Friend Dahmer was filmed in Jeffery Dahmer’s actual childhood home in Bath, Ohio. Revere High school he went to was going to be used for the movie as well, but the school rejected the offer.
Right after filming a scene, Alex Wolff (Derf) wasn’t feeling well and started cursing out Jeffrey Dahmer. At that exact moment, all the power and backup generators cut out and Alex immediately started yelling out apologies. He said he felt like he was being haunted as he tried to sleep that night.
The screenplay for this film was featured in the 2014 Blacklist, a list of the “most liked” unmade scripts of the year.
After 12 hours of filming, Ross would take a shower for 30+ minutes and just think about his dark role that he’s portraying.
When Ross got the role, his insecurity kicked in making him feel like he would ruin the movie.
