Horror Review: Triangle (2009)

A group of friends suffer a yachting accident and take refuge on a cruise drifting on the open sea, but quickly realize they were better off on the upturned yacht.

There’s not many movies left that can mess with my head, but this is certainly one that does exactly that and then some.

So, I knew nothing about this feature when I first went into it, if I’m truly honest with you I remember just thinking that I was in for another ninety minutes of a typically average Horror film with a story that we’ve all seen a thousand times, with this in mind my brain was nowhere near ready for what lay ahead.

Now I don’t mean any of what I just said as an insult but I’m sure that many of you can place yourself in that exact same situation were you have that ‘Horror fatigue’ and we just expect so little as we’ve seen so much that has sadly ended in disappointment, I’m sure I can’t be the only one out there who has experienced this.
Anyway that wasn’t what happened here, for the next hour and 40 minutes my brain was put through so many twists and turns that I didn’t know which way was right, which way wads left, which way was up and which way was down. My brain was just pure mush, but I had to watch it again and again and again.
After finally wrapping my head around it all I finally realised what such a clever yet complex film this is, you have to pay the feature some serious attention or you will get lost along the way. It helps that it’s acted out fantastically alongside some superbly haunting writing that has a huge affect on you as a viewer.
“Triangle” is a film I’ve found to be seriously under rated, maybe its complexity was too much for some. One thing I do know is, is that those who have seen it never forget it.

Miscellaneous facts about the film:

The film is set in Miami, Florida, but was filmed entirely in Queensland. Both Florida and Queensland are known as “The Sunshine State”; a nickname used on a road sign in the film.

It is possible to see the set of the ship at Southport Spit, Southport, Queensland, Australia on Google Earth. The exact coordinates are -27.97293,153.426902.

The recording of “Anchors Aweigh” used in the film is performed by Glenn Miller and his Orchestra. The aircraft carrying Glenn Miller to Paris in December 1944 disappeared over the English Channel in what is often considered a “Bermuda Triangle”-type incident.

The film makes many oblique references to The Shining (1980). The number 237 crops up, which was the same number of the spooky hotel room Danny was forbidden to go into; there are also words written on a mirror, a ballroom and an axe.

The “Aeolus,” the ship that Jess and the others jump to, is named after the Ancient (mythological) Greek ruler of the winds.

Lindsay Lohan was rumored to play the lead role. Martin Henderson was also considered for a role in this film.
