For this ‘Ten Years On’ post we take a look back at “Zombieland”.
I can’t believe it’s been ten whole years since this film was made, TEN YEARS! One entire decade… I’m in shock.
Every now and then a Horror film comes out that crosses that mainstream border and you know it’s going to be a hit before it’s even hit the big screen. That was the case with “Zombieland”, talk about the right movie for the right time, this was it. It also helped it had a major marketing campaign that managed to grab peoples attention.
The film is one of only a handful of examples of how great a comedy Horror can be if done properly, the studio obviously knew they had a hit on their hands as they stumped up a reported near $25 million to make it. A high budget gamble for investors to make for a comedy Horror but that gamble paid off and they more than made their money back.
Before it was made into a feature film it was initially going to be a TV series, when you see the ‘Zombie Kill Of The Week’ scene well that was going to be an episodic feature. Of course there was an awful TV pilot episode that Amazon made but whether it would’ve been a success if it was initially a TV series we will never know.
The magic for me was in the casting, they all had amazing chemistry together and with a great script it was a sure fire hit. “Zombieland” quickly made itself a part of pop culture, I’m sure Twinkie sales went through the roof upon this films release. Even now, all this time later, people still talk about the Bill Murray cameo and that clown…
Ten Years On and “Zombieland” is finally releasing that long awaited rumoured sequel, whether it will match the level of success that this film reached, we will have to wait and see.
