What does 2023 have in store for Horror fans?
2022 saw the Horror genre’s popularity continue to rise.

I think there’s no doubting the surprise of the year was how big “Terrifier 2” became, whilst Horror fans were already aware of ‘Art The Clown’ this release seemed to capture everyone’s attention and became something of a phenomenon raking in over $12 million. It certainly brought a lot of eyes back to the genre.
I was extremely happy with its much deserved success but what I enjoyed about it was the throwback aspect, it was like watching an over the top 80’s gore-fest and I mean, who doesn’t enjoy that?! I hope other film-makers take note of this and how much people enjoyed it. It was a truly entertaining watch and I’d like to see more of this style.

We also got more of the art-style Horror films in 2022, otherwise known as ‘elevated Horror’ (I REALLY do hate that term). I do find these types of films to be very hit and miss, I can’t quite put my finger on why but I must admit that I find them more miss than hit. Who knows, maybe this style just isn’t for me.
2023 will see the release of the highly anticipated new entry in “Evil Dead” franchise with “Evil Dead Rise”. Sadly Bruce Campbell will not be reprising his role as the beloved ‘Ash’ and we’re yet to know where this fits into the timeline, is it a continuation from the remake or not, I guess we’ll find out in April.

One film I’m extremely nervous about that’s being released this year is “The Exorcist” sequel. “The Exorcist” is a film I hold in very high regard, as do a lot of Horror fans, so there is a ton of trepidation around this release, even with original star Ellen Burstyn returning to the role of ‘Chris MacNeil’.
This will be the start of a new trilogy for the franchise and is being headed by the same team who recently just finished up the new “Halloween” trilogy with how divisive fans were about those films it will either make you more anxious or more happy about it and before you ask there’s no news of a Linda Blair return yet.

I think one film that fans are eager to so see is the much talked about release of the ‘”‘Winnie The Pooh’ themed Horror film – “Winnie The Pooh: Blood And Honey”. I’m extremely curious about this feature myself and I’ve heard it’s just the start of a batch of fairy tale Horror films with “Bambi” and “Peter Pan” also set to get the Horror treatment.
As I said at the beginning “Terrifier 2” brought a lot of attention back to the genre and there’s no denying that Horror is popular once again. What I really hope for the genre in 2023 is for these Indie films to continue to break through and break down those much outdated barriers.

Hopefully 2023 will be a great year for our beloved genre, popular or not there is a ton of talent in the Horror genre and it’s time for that talent to shine through.
